Teacher housing for rural Texas districts: start with suite units

2026-08-30 · teacher housing

Suite kitchen of a 16×76 4-suite full-kitchen unit

In boomtown school districts the problem is often the same: a candidate accepts the job, then can’t find a place to rent at a teacher’s salary. Some districts have started housing new staff themselves.

A small start

One or two 4-suite units on district land gives four to eight people a private entrance, kitchen, and bath. That is closer to an apartment than a dorm, and it can grow one building at a time as the program proves out.

Steps

  1. Confirm with counsel how the district can own and lease housing
  2. Pick land with water, sewer, and power nearby
  3. Board approval and budget
  4. Order units and prepare pads
  5. Lease to staff under a written agreement

What to ask before you order

  • What code type does the site or local rule require?
  • Who sets the units and connects utilities?
  • What does the quote include (unit, delivery, set)?
