Skid house vs. bunkhouse vs. crew unit: what's the difference?
2026-08-14 · oilfield · buying guide
Oilfield buyers use these words interchangeably. They are not quite the same.
| Term | What it usually means | Moves by |
|---|---|---|
| Skid house | Unit built on steel skids | Winch truck / gin pole |
| Bunkhouse | Multi-room unit for workers, often with shared bath | Chassis or skids |
| Crew unit | 16×76-type unit, 4–7 private rooms with baths | Chassis, like a manufactured home |
| Sleeper | Crew unit with no kitchen | Chassis |
For crews staying more than a few weeks, private rooms with private baths are now the norm. See floor plans and oilfield housing.
