What utilities does a man camp need?
Reviewed 2026-10-19 by the Workforce Housing Direct team
A man camp needs potable water, wastewater (septic, holding tanks, or sewer), electrical service sized for every unit's PTACs and water heaters, and usually internet. Site lighting, fire access, and trash service round it out. Power and wastewater usually take the most lead time.
Planning list
| Utility | Questions to answer early |
|---|---|
| Water | Municipal tap, permitted well, or hauled water with storage? Fire flow? |
| Wastewater | Sewer connection, permitted septic (OSSF), or pumped holding tanks? |
| Power | Utility service size, transformer lead time, or generators to start? |
| Internet | Fiber, fixed wireless, or satellite. Crews rank this near the top |
Each crew unit runs several PTACs plus a water heater, so the electrical load adds up fast across 50 units. Have an electrician size the service from the unit spec sheets.
