Do bunkhouses need a permanent foundation in Texas?
Reviewed 2026-10-19 by the Workforce Housing Direct team
Generally no. TDLR treats dorm-type crew units as industrialized buildings, and those can be installed on a non-permanent foundation designed for the building. Some small temporary buildings can be exempt, but TDLR has said bunkhouses open to employees are not exempt. Local rules, wind loads, and your landowner may still require specific tie-downs or foundations.
What to confirm
- The unit’s TDLR approval and installation requirements
- Tie-down and anchoring for the site’s wind design
- City or county rules if inside city limits
- Floodplain elevation requirements
General information only. Confirm with TDLR and your local authority.
