How do data centers house construction workers?
Reviewed 2026-10-19 by the Workforce Housing Direct team
Data center projects use four options, often at once: hotels and rentals (which fill fast in small towns), RV parks (many new ones near campuses), leased camps from operators who provide beds and services under multi-year contracts, and owned crew housing bought by the contractor or a landowner. Operators have announced contracts covering thousands of beds for Texas data center and power projects in 2026.
The options compared
| Option | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels / rentals | No capital | Fills fast, long commutes, high per diem |
| RV parks | Cheap per site | Workers need their own RV; parks near campuses fill |
| Leased camp (operator) | Turnkey with food and housekeeping | Paying for beds and services for years; no asset at the end |
| Owned crew housing | Lower cost per bed on long jobs; resale value | Capital and site work up front |
